A spelter or zinc French clock face featuring a boar, a hare, a partridge, and a horn framing a 16th century image from an emblem by Joachim Camerarius, a German botanist, physician, and humanist, was born on Nov. 6, 1534. Camerarius issued his emblem book in four parts, or centuries, each with 100 emblems. Emblems were clever combinations of an image, motto, and epigram that proved to be very popular in 16th-century humanist circles.
