Wonderful French painting, in what looks like the original giltwood frame and French matting. The painting features a troubadour inscribing a column with the words, “Viva ou mourir pour Elle, J. J. M 1826“ or “To live or die for her, J. J. M 1826. On the reverse is the artist’s name, “J. J. Mousard, 1826, 1783-1870, Ecole Geneviève.” The young lady is in period attire, however, her suitor is dressed in the costume of a troubadour from a more “romantic” age.
