Wonderful late 19th or early 19th century French, portrait miniature of a young woman who appears to be styled à la victime — a somewhat morbid mode of dress popular after the French Revolution that mimicked the shorn hair and white chemises of imprisoned aristocrats. Red coral beads or ribbons were worn around the neck to symbolize the blood shed by the guillotine. Watercolor on ivory. Antique gilt on brass frame with an unusual faux bamboo effect, which is a later replacement.
