Wonderful “Tassie” of Prime Minister William Pitt (1759-1806). James Tassie was a Scottish gem engraver, who developed a technique using an opaque glass that could replicate any color. Tassies were created using a molding process, replicating classical subjects, proverbs, and portraits. Tassie also developed casting models that Josiah Wedgwood used in creating jasperware.
